“Learn Spanish from zero” advice usually means: download an app, binge videos, maybe book a random tutor. Three weeks later, you have vocabulary lists and little confidence speaking.

A Spanish tutor for beginners should give you a first month you can describe in one sentence: what you practiced, what improved, and what comes next.

I am Santiago Garnica, a Colombian lawyer and Spanish tutor at Garnica & Co. I teach structured 1:1 Colombian / Latin American Spanish for English and German speakers — with bridges in English (C1) or German (B2) when a rule needs clarity. Beginners get calm structure, not chaotic free chat.

What beginners actually need (vs what the internet sells)

You need:

  • A level check that listens to you speak, not only a quiz badge
  • One weekly focus you can name
  • Corrections on sounds and phrases that block understanding
  • Short homework you will actually do
  • A variety you will hear in real LatAm life — not only Spain textbook defaults

You do not need:

  • Twenty worksheets that never leave your notes app
  • A slang firehose in week one
  • Marketplace anxiety as the only booking path
  • A promise that “fluent in 30 days” is honest

Apps are maps. A tutor is a guide for your first streets.

Week-by-week curriculum (example first month)

This is a model, not a rigid script. Your pace depends on you — the structure does not disappear.

Week 1 — Orient

Free 25-minute class on garnica.co: short form (Formspree) → free credit → time on Cal.com. In class: rapport in EN/DE/ES, level check through real speaking, goal (travel, everyday, or work), language of explanation. You leave with a tiny speaking target for the week (for example: greet, say your name and job, ask one clarifying question).

Week 2 — Survive the basics

Greetings, numbers, time, ordering, asking for help — in Colombian Spanish you will actually hear. Pronunciation focus on vowels and a few consonants that block understanding. Homework: five reusable survival sentences, said aloud daily.

Week 3 — Build one story in the present

Present tense about your day or job. Connectors (y, pero, porque). Corrections on article–noun pairs and ser/estar where they appear. Homework: a 8–10 sentence “my day” you can reuse and expand.

Week 4 — Review and stretch

Same topics, faster. One stretch goal: past tense preview for a weekend story or a short work-email stub if your goal is professional. Decide on a prepaid pack if you continue. Leave month one able to say: “I can survive X situations and tell a short present-tense story.”

Progress metrics you can feel (without fake scores)

We do not invent gamified XP. We track simple, honest signals:

  • Can you say your weekly focus sentences without reading?
  • Do strangers (or the tutor) understand you on first try more often?
  • Did one stubborn error shrink (articles, a vowel, a verb)?
  • Can you describe last week’s focus in one sentence in English or German?

Margo wrote that lessons are organized around where she needs help, with check-ins on her goals. That is the beginner pace: one focus, then the next.

Checklist: what to bring to the free class

  • One goal in plain language (travel / everyday / work)
  • Your approximate level (true zero is fine)
  • Preferred bridge language: English or German
  • Timezone and two time windows that usually work
  • Optional: one painful moment (“I freeze ordering coffee”)

No long biography required. No WhatsApp wall. Booking stays on garnica.co.

What “structured” means here

  • Speaking first, with targeted correction
  • One weekly focus
  • Homework that fits a busy life
  • Explanations in English (C1) or German (B2) when the rule needs a bridge
  • Colombian / LatAm default — ustedes, clear everyday vocabulary

You are not buying endless free chat. You are buying clarity.

Price and packs (after the free class)

  • List: $20 / 50 min
  • 5 lessons — $85

FAQ

Can I start with zero Spanish?

Yes. True beginners are welcome. The free class checks that the pace and explanation language work for you. Week 1–2 focus on survival speaking, not advanced grammar.

How many lessons per week?

Most beginners do well with one focused lesson per week plus short homework. Two per week works if your calendar allows and you still complete the tiny speaking targets.

English or German explanations?

Both are available as bridges: English C1, German B2. You choose in onboarding. Practice still returns to Spanish.

What happens after the free 25 minutes?

If it fits, you pick a pack (often the 10-lesson pack). If it does not fit, you stop — no pack pressure as a gimmick. Policies are stated on the site.

Do you follow a fixed textbook?

We use structure, not a single mandatory book. Materials adapt to your goal (travel, everyday, work). Colombian Spanish remains the spoken default.
